Job Description

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

To be the operational manager for project activities, taking accountability of financial resources for project activities, ensuring the delivery of first class levels of service, achievement of financial targets and driving the new business activity in the region.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Projects

  • Carry out full project mobilisation; ranging from analysing drawings, putting programmes together, sourcing and verifying sub-contractors and programming
  • Carry out Contract interpretation and be prepared to mount commercial challenges with the aid of QS
  • Manage resources on numerous projects at a time to ensure that the projects are running on time and according to budget costs and margins

Health & Safety

  • Health & Safety accountability for all projects within remit – ensuring site safety and people safety meets required company standards
  • Understand the law relating to Health & Safety and understand and focus on implementing the company’s Health & Safety policy
  • Responsible for understanding and implementing risk assessments and COSHH
  • Understand and work with integrity to agreed company procedures, in particular, operating within the Company quality system
  • Responsible for selecting the correct machine for the purpose, understand the maintenance required and have systems in place to ensure maintenance takes place
  • Show a rigorous concern for the security of company buildings, vehicles, machinery and materials
  • Take responsibility for contract depot/office site
  • Encourage all colleagues to display integrity: wear the correct corporate clothing, keep vehicles and machinery clean and well maintained and that sites are kept clean and tidy at all times

Customer Focus

  • Client management – act as principal contact for clients of projects within remit, keep communication channels open, mitigate any risks and provide constant updates; also managing design and build projects
  • Act as the key point of reference for the client and all other stakeholders at a management level
  • Ensure and take actions to maintain effective client relationships across all projects
  • Quickly identify any potential client conflict or dissatisfaction and take effective and rapid actions to rectify them
  • Take the lead with clients’ requirements for changes to the service or its budget, ensuring that contractual changes do not erode the level of profit achieved at the contract and are formally documented

Growing the Business

  • Liaison with Business Development regarding tenders in progress and mobilisations of secured work

Planning

  • Administration and record keeping – ensuring that all project admin has been established according to best practice and a system is in place for maintenance
  • Establish and reinforce standards of resource management within own project teams e.g. process for sign off of sub-contract orders
  • Understand the precise needs and expectations of clients

Financial Performance and Control

  • Take full responsibility for the financial control at each project, including management of budget, correct ordering procedures and cost control
  • People and sub-contractor management – cost control

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of sub-contractors

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS 

  • Deliver improved profitability year on year
  • Ensure repeat business with existing clients/contractors
  • Develop relationships with the Business Development Team

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Operational manager with experience in Civil Engineering, Public Realm and Associated Landscaping
  • IOSH or SMSTS or equivalent Health & Safety qualification
  • Experience of working with local authorities, the commercial sector and managing operations with a turnover of up to £6 million
  • Full breadth of project management experience within external works
  • Resourcing and managing of people (direct or sub-contractors)
  • Experience of principle contractor and sub-contractor
  • Proven track record of multi contract management within the sector
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Highly level of numeracy and financial knowledge
  • Excellent IT skills (Finance system Excel, Project Management)
